kmail – issues

Recently I started using Kmail for checking my official mails. I used the ‘disconnected imap’ feature so that I can have a local copy of my entire mailbox. But I faced problems while sending the patches using kmail. Even though the patch is inlined, it was not equivalent to mutt’s way of inlining patches.

I started using mutt. But I was very comfortable with the GUI environment to check mails in different folders. So I decided to use mutt for sending patches while kmail to read mails. Using fetchmail and procmail I have the local copy of mails. So instead of using disconnected imap, I wanted to use the local mbox as the account type in kmail. When I configured kmail to use the local mbox, it creates its own copy in .kde/share/apps/kmail folder. So I have two copies of my mails. Is there any way to specify kmail that ‘hi kmail, don’t take a local copy again, use the mbox itself’

I observed another two issues with kmail.

  1. I use both 32 & 64 bit Fedora distributions on my system. I configured kmail in my 64bit fedora and was using it for a long time. For some reason, I have to boot into 32bit Fedora and at that time kmail was not able to use the 64bit Fedora Kmail’s configuration and every thing was lost. When I booted into 64bit Fedora there also Kmail lost its configuration. So I need to re-start every thing (configure the account and download all mails from IMAP server).
  2. Another strange issue is that if the ~ partition is full, kmail tends to loose the configuration and all mails. So I need to re-start every thing.

Am I the only one facing this kind of problem(s)?

Whats free?

Recent news says that to celebrate Tamil new year and Pongal festival, TN government decided to give the ingredients required for preparing pongal(sweet) to all ration card holders at no cost (yeah, its free).

So I was thinking what could be given as free in future and they are:

  • For new year(2009), Good Friday and Christmas ingredients needed for preparing cake can be given.
  • For each family member birthday celebrations, ingredients required for preparing a special sweet can be given.
  • For Valentine’s day, Greetings card/small gift items can be given to the lovers
  • For Deepavali, crackers worth of Rs.100 and sweet worth of Rs.100 can be given
  • When a new government swears in, ingredients required to prepare halwa can be given.
  • For Akshay Trithai 0.0000001 gram gold coin can be given
  • For Vinayakar Chathurthi(aka Ganesh Chathurthi) ingredients required to prepare Kozhukkattai can be given
  • For Ayudha pooja season, rice flake and some other items can be given free.
  • For Ramjaan, items needed for preparing Biriyaani can be given
  • For Independence & Republic Day, free electircity can be given to enjoy Television programmes.

Installing F10

Fedora 10 was released yesterday (25/Nove/2008). So I downloaded the DVD iso image into my system hard disk. Then I copied the vmlinuz and initrd into the then /boot directory and updated entries for this kernel and initrd in the grub.conf.

Rebooted the machine and selected this kernel to start the F10 installation. Installer asked the source of installation, I gave the path where I saved the DVD iso image. As well as the installer required the install.img file location to be also mentioned. I thought the installer would use the local DVD iso image for installation.

After selecting the partition layout and installer said that the installation required ethernet connection and it tried to connect to fedora mirror sites to get the repository information. Oops, why can’t it use the local DVD image itself? It took some 10-15 minutes to get the repository information. And then it started downloading each packages from network. Imagine the network speed of 384kbps and installing 1384 packages. Even after 15 minutes it had installed only 10 packages. So I need to cancel the installation.

Fedora installer had a nice feature of specifying the local DVD iso image to use as the source of installation. Have they removed this feature from F10 (or I don’t know how to use that feature?).

I need to either burn the DVD or use local NFS based installation to avoid this slow network based install.

Why one has to resign?

Former TN chief minister Jayalalitha’s car was attacked by a mob during her visit to pay homage to freedom fighter Pasumpon Muthuramalingam. So during yesterday’s assembly session, opposition party AIADMK members wanted to discuss about this. As the speaker did not grant the permission to discuss, they did a walk out and demanded Karunanidhi’s regignation for failing to provide the security to Jayalalitha.

What my concern is how an opposition party can ask a Government to resign which is (s)elected by the people. (Though a state Government can be dismissed by Central is a different aspect)

Still I do not understand for what all reasons the opposition parties would ask for a ruling Government to resign. If the same members asked the TN Government to take steps for resolving the issues like Tamil fishermen being killed by the Srilankan Government and civilian tamils being killed by the Srilankan army in Srilanka and if the TN Government fails in this respect, the reason for assking the Govt to resign is atleast acceptable. But the reason for resignation here is the lack of security given to their party leader. They are loyal to the party leader. But there is no hope for being loyal to the people who voted for them.

And so far, I have observed that those (opposition parties) who ask a Government to resign for what so ever reasons, have not resigned when they were ruling (even when they have also undergone similar situations).

More over the current ruling party (DMK), if becomes an opposition party in future (even in past), they would also demand the then ruling party to resign for silly reasons. So there is no difference between DMK or AIADMK. Similarly for Central Government, DMK can be replaced by Congress and AIADMK by BJP. :). For other states, one can substitute with the respective local parties.

My opinion as of now is that, to continue in politics, one would certainly have the following qualities: selective amnesia and no logical thinking.

Boy fed zoo reptiles to crocodile

A seven-year-old boy has been filmed going on the rampage at a popular zoo in Australia, killing rare reptiles and feeding live ones to a crocodile.

Footage from the security cameras at Alice Springs Reptile Centre caught the child smiling as he killed a total of 13 animals.

During his 30-minute spree, he was seen hurling the animals over the security fence into the crocodile enclosure.

Zoo officials described the boy’s actions as “unbelievable”.

They are considering suing the parents as the boy is too young to be prosecuted.

./configure

Recently I encountered the following error when trying to build a package by running ./configure

configure: error: cannot find install-sh or install.sh in . ./.. ./../..

This error was weired and I have not seen this before. When I checked the directory contents some of the links were broken. After googling, I found out that it could be related to autoconf/automake version mismatch.

So I first ran autoconf and then automake. But automake again emitted some errors, but it also said some useful information. It asked me to rebuild aclocal.m4 by running the aclocal command. What else? I ran aclocal and autoconf. It fixed the broken links and then finally I was able to run ./configure. Happy ./configure ‘ing

KDE Bluetooth

Generally I transfer files/songs from my computer to my bluetooth enabled mobile phone Nokia N72. But when I want to do on the otherway, ie to transfer files from my mobile phone to the computer, I faced the problem. Mobile used to say “Connection failed”. When I checked for list of bluetooth packages, every thing was installed on my system.

Then I did yum install *obex*, and now I could transfer files from my mobile phone to system. I wish these obex packages were tagged/related to bluetooth packages, so that I might have not seen this problem at all.
